FEBRUARY 2009

STEPHEN JOSEPH
HVAC
|
Steve is an excellent employee and a great supervisor, but this nomination is not about his work ethic. It's rather a direct result of his unselfish act to try and save the life of a fellow employee who was suffering from a grave medical emergency on Friday, Feb 13. While steve's heroic efforts unfortunately were not enough, he clearly went above and beyond his normal duties when he came to his co-worker's aid. It wasn't good enough to just call 911 - instead, he performed CPR for nearly 15 minutes until help arrived, quite an exhausting feat. Steve deserves our thanks and our respect for his valiant efforts. |
JANUARY 2009

TIM MURPHY
LOCK SHOP
|
Tim Murphy is the newest locksmith in FM and has really fit in well and learned the campus quickly. He has a very good work ethic and cares about seeing a project or issue completed correctly the first time. An example of this is when he was tasked with re-keying the Physics building after being here for only 8 months. Tim has recently been working on reorganizing the lockshop, key shop, and key cage. These spaces have not been organized for a long time so there has been a great deal of sorting, reorganizing, and cleaning involved. Tim has informally taken the lead on this and his efforts have produced a more efficient workplace. This in turn has drastically improved lock & key services to the campus community. Tim is a valuable team member and worthy of this recognition. |
EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR, 2008

EUGENE KAHAUNAELE
EMS/Controls
|
Eugene has been assigned to the Energy Management Controls Shop since January 2004. He is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of electronic and pneumatic controls for the building mechanical systems and a supervisor. Eugene oversees the work assignments and task for all field work. Eugene’s work ensures Students, Faculty, and Staff has comfortable indoor environments for their work and the efficient operation of mechanical equipment. Eugene is the type of individual whose many attributes include a “can do” demeanor. He has a team work philosophy that is infectious to all those around him. An example of his outstanding abilities is the key role he played in solving a 3 year old problem with communications between a meter and the campus meter system. His skills and talents were instrumental in repairing Energy Management Control Systems and thereby saving UNLV thousands of dollars in replacement costs. |
DECEMBER 2008

BRIAN HENDRICK
GROUNDS
|
Brian has been instrumental in the recent xeriscape conversion at EPA, a conversion of over 125,000 square feet of turf. He has also shown exceptional initiative and motivation to complete other construction-related requests. He continues to work on his education at night to improve his knowledge. Brian is a great asset to the Grounds Department and UNLV. |
NOVEMBER 2008

CHLOE KLANGOS
RECYCLING
|
Chloe is a hard worker. She is in constant motion. She helps keep the operation running smoothly. She has initiative and wonderful judgement. She is fantastic at delegating duties to the student workers and the court ordered community service workers, but she is also a “lead by example” manager. She gets in there and does all the tasks in this yard that need to be completed. She will do anything to keep our program going day to day! We have a big job at recycling. We have a constant influx of materials that need to be collected and processed. She keeps a positive attitude through the rough times. She values this program, this university and her team members. She is the best possible assistant manager because she cares as much as I do (as the founder of this program). She is invested and I know I can trust her in my absence to either do what I would do or do it better! She is irreplaceable and UNLV is lucky to have her as an employee. |
OCTOBER 2008

MELVIN RUSSELL
MAINT REPAIR SPECIALIST I
|
Melvin was recently promoted to the Night Crew. The shop had recently had the fourth member, an HVAC Tech move on to another job, and the other two members have been gone from work due to health issues. Melvin has done an excellent job carrying on with assigned work, the constant emergency calls and random unlocks. He has also had to supervise an outside vendor to load bank the generators on campus, a job that didn’t originate from him. He has picked up this large job that involves all the generators on campus and done a great job seeing that it is done. He has also continued with all the normal PM’s the shop has. |
SEPTEMBER 2008

SIMON TORRES
GROUNDS MAINTENANCE WORKER II
|
Simon has been a valued member of the grounds shop since he came to us just over a year ago. He is cordial with others, comes to work with a positive attitude and is always willing to do whatever the day brings. He thinks of new ways to perform his tasks more efficiently. He's the only grounds person working weekends and he needs to collect trash from the entire campus. In order to make his rounds more efficient and less time consuming he takes a cart with a trailer. This way he can make fewer trips to the yard to dispose of the trash. This enables him to perform other necessary tasks on the weekends such as supplemental watering of grass or new shrubs. |
AUGUST 2008

GEORGE EBNER
MAINT. REPAIR SPEC. 1
|
George is a crucial member of a very small team who makes Shadow Lane Campus run smoothly and efficiently. This campus would struggle to operate without George’s daily dedication to his job. He can always be counted on to be here with a positive attitude. He rarely takes time off and is willing to do whatever it takes to make our customers happy. |
JULY 2008

ROBIN SCHOLL
ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT III
|
Robin was a key contributor in the success of this year's fiscal close-out. She worked very hard completing an audit of all FM account transactions, making corrections as needed and then providing the correct information to the Controller's Office.
Robin has also been instrumental to implementing new business practices within FM, offering suggestions for how to improve both the speed and accuracy of our data. |
JUNE 2008

ANTONIO DURON
MAINT REPAIR SPECIALIST II |
Tony was instrumental in completing the turf reduction project at the Thomas & Mack. 120,000 square feet of lawn was converted to water conserving desert landscaping, requiring numerous hours of overtime and coordination of material delivery and pickup. Tony's work is commendable! |
