FDH Drain Lines - Reminder - 04/20/06

Just a quick reminder:

The Facilities Management Plumbing Shop in conjunction with Risk Management will begin replacing failing drain lines FDH. The work will begin April 23 on the seventh floor, and is scheduled to be done by May 8th. This will require the Men's and Women's public restrooms on the seventh floor being closed at this time. These closings are necessary to replace the failing drain lines. This will not affect the restroom in the President's office.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about this work.

2005.07.11 - Fire/Evacuation Drill at FRA

A fire/evacuation drill will be conducted in the Frazier Hall (FRA) before July 15th. These drills are mandated by State and local fire agencies, and are invaluable to the participants. Our desire is to minimize the amount of disturbance to FRA programs, but also to maximize the fire and life safety level of the building users and occupants.

FRA programs will be faxed a memo outlining the procedures they are requested to follow. Please make enough copies to distribute to all impacted staff and faculty. If there is anyone who is disabled or physically challenged in FRA please contact Edward Gannon, Fire Safety Officer, at extension 5-1791 for accomodations. The entire exercise should take less than 30 minutes. It will give Environmental Health & Safety an opportunity to test the evacuation effectiveness of FRA under realistic conditions. In addition, it will give alarm technicians the opportunity to test the systems and make necessary adjustments/corrections.

We will attempt to schedule around particularly important events but require realism in the exercise. Again, if you have any questions or requests, please contact Edward Gannon directly at extension 5-1791.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this essential procedure.

2005.05.27 - The UNLV University Response Team

Facilities Management & Planning and Public Safety are pleased to announce the creation of the campus University Response Team (URT). There are currently 51 URT members, all volunteers from within FM&P. Each has received 24 hours of specialized training and are certified in First Aid, CPR and AED procedures. This program provides additional campus resources to assist our Campus Police Officers and local emergency responders. The URT works closely with the Department of Public Safety to support their efforts to manage campus emergencies such as power outages, fires, site control, traffic control, or hazardous spills to name but a few. URT members can be easily recognized by their bright yellow vests marked with the letters URT on their backs. The URT is dispatched by Public Safety when needed. Please follow any instructions they may give you regarding your safe evacuation, or directing you to a safe assembly area.

This group of dedicated volunteers has devoted many hours to their training and certifications, and are to be commended for their efforts. Congratulations to them and to Ed Gannon, Fire and Life Safety Officer, for his efforts on the development and implementation of this program. If you would like more information or have an interest to join the URT, please contact Environmental Health & Safety at 54226.

These drills are mandated by State and local fire agencies, and are invaluable to the participants. Our desire is to minimize the amount of disturbance to LFG programs, but also to maximize the fire and life safety level of the building users and occupants.

LFG programs will be faxed a memo outlining the procedures they are requested to follow. Please make enough copies to distribute to all impacted staff and faculty. If there is anyone who is disabled or physically challenged in LFG please contact Edward Gannon, Fire Safety Officer, at extension 5-1791 for accomodations. The entire exercise should take less than 30 minutes. It will give Environmental Health & Safety an opportunity to test the evacuation effectiveness of LFG under realistic conditions.

2005.05.17 - April Campus Fire Report (part 2)

February 26, 2005
RESIDENCE HALL FIRE
UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA
Tucson, Arizona
An unattended candle started a fire in a 1st floor room of a campus residence hall. Approximately 100 students were evacuated. No one was injured, and damage was minor, estimated at $1,000. Candles are prohibited by campus policy.

March 14, 2005
RESIDENCE HALL FIRE
PITTSBURGH STATE UNIVERSITY
Pittsburgh, Kansas
A fire started at 12:40 PM, when a student in a 2nd floor room tried to heat up shoe polish with a lighter. He ignited a rag instead, which spread to other combustibles. The student put out the fire himself, with little damage and no injuries. The University has a policy against any open flames in residence halls.

March 14, 2005 ACADEMIC BUILDING FIRE
COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF RHODE ISLAND
Warwick, Rhode Island
Arson investigators are searching for a cause of a fire set in a storage room on the 2nd floor student government wing. No one was injured, but thousands of students were evacuated. A student tried unsuccessfully to extinguish the fire with an extinguisher, and firefighters eventually put out the fire. Classes were cancelled for at least one day, because of lingering smoke issues. The college is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.

March 22, 2005
STUDENT LEARNING CENTER FIRE
UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA
Athens, Georgia
A fire broke out in the 1st floor bathroom of the Learning Center at about 7:00 PM. A staff member reported the fire and activated the alarm. The building was evacuated with no injuries, and the fire remains under investigation for arson.

March 23, 2005
RESIDENCE HALL CHEMICAL SPILL
UNIVERSITY OF MAINE
Orono, Maine
Chemical engineering students accidentally spilled muriatic acid in their room while working on a class project. The building was evacuated while firefighters neutralized the acid and took air samples. There were no serious injuries.

March 23, 2005
RESIDENCE HALL FIRE
GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY
Washington, DC
A fire broke out at 4:50 AM in Mable Thurston Hall, a high-rise, 9 story residence hall housing 1,000 freshmen. The fire occurred on the top floor. The fire was detected by two Secret Service officers driving by, who saw the fire in a window, and immediately contacted their dispatch, to alert Washington FD. The officers then went to the fire floor and made several attempts to enter the burning room, but were driven back by heat and smoke. Firefighters arrived on the scene, attacked the fire, and removed 19-year-old Kevin McLaughlin, who was in respiratory arrest and was burned. He remains in critical condition. The Secret Service officers were treated for smoke inhalation. At least 5 other rooms were heavily damaged. It appears that the student fell asleep while cooking some food, and the portable grill ignited the room contents. The building is equipped with sprinklers, but not in individual rooms.

2005.05.16 - April Campus Fire Report (part 1)

March 27, 2005
BUILDING CONSTRUCTION SITE ARSON FIRE
PENN STATE UNIVERSITY
University Park, Pennsylvania
An early morning fire, determined to be arson, broke out in the new, $23.5 million School of Architecture and Landscape that was still under construction. The damage is estimated at $500,000, and will delay the move-in date for faculty and students. Quick response by firefighters limited the damage. Graffiti left on the building led to the arrest of a former student on 3 counts of arson, vandalism, and other criminal charges. Bail was set at $875,000.

April 1, 2005
DRAIN FIRE
GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY
Washington, DC
A Public Safety Officer used an extinguisher to control a fire in a storm drain at 3:40 PM. The source of the fire was a gasoline spill, leaking from a maintenance storage closet. There were no injuries.

April 3, 2005
RESIDENCE HALL KITCHEN FIRE
HOWARD UNIVERSITY
Washington, DC
A kitchen fire started at 12:20 AM by a student who left a pan of cooking grease and French fries on a stove. Heavy smoke activated the alarm system, and 150 students evacuated, as the first floor filled with smoke. There was a delay in evacuation, due to a previous series of false alarms. Firefighters extinguished the fire, and residents return later that night.

April 6, 2005
RESIDENCE HALL FIRE : SPRINKLER SAVE
ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY
Tempe, Arizona
An unattended candle caused a fire in a student room at 4:45 PM. Nearly 300 residents were evacuated while firefighters entered the building. The candle had ignited combustibles in the room. The smoke detector had been covered with plastic, so the alarm was not triggered until heat from the fire set off a sprinkler head. Twenty students have been relocated, as 10 rooms suffered smoke and water damage. The University prohibits the use of candles in residence halls.

April 6, 2005
LAUNDRY ROOM FIRE
UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND
College Park, Maryland
Lint inside a dryer caught fire in the Health and Human Performance Building around 12:00 PM, after 2 staff members put in laundry and left. The smoke set off the fire alarm and the occupants were evacuated. Firefighters extinguished the fire in about 15 minutes and ventilated the building. Damage is estimated at $8,000.

April 7, 2005
RESIDENCE HALL GAS EXPLOSION
NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY
Boston, Massachusetts
A natural gas explosion in Kerr Hall injured 7 people, including 3 students, at approximately 1:30 PM. Minutes before the explosion, one of the head chefs warned people that he smelled gas. Victims were sent to local hospitals with broken bones, cuts, bruises and burns. The leak and explosion appears to have started in a boiler room. An hour after the incident, smoke was observed by residents of an adjacent building, Melvin Hall, and alarms were sounded. Firefighters located a small blaze in a basement crawl space that extended up the inside walls of the first floor. This two-alarm fire took over an hour to extinguish. The explosion caused structural damage to Kerr Hall, and residents had to be relocated. An investigation is underway to determine whether KeySpan energy crews, who were working on 300 feet of gas line near the building were somehow responsible. KeySpan has offered to assist in the student relocations. Damage is estimated at $800,000.

Due to the large number of incidents reported nationwide, a second April campus report will be issued shortly. Our office reminds the UNLV community that the Nevada State Fire Marshal prohibits candles or open flames on campus.

2005.04.07 - Potential Increased Pest Activity

Due to the unusually heavy rains in Southern Nevada this past winter, Facilities Management is bracing for a potential increase in pest activities around our campus. Already concentrations of ants, bees, moths, and other flying insects have been reported. Our contracted pest control vendor is continually monitoring this situation and is in constant contact with us on this issue. They have taken several proactive steps to help prevent infestations and keep pest activities to a minimum. You can help as well by keeping food covered and stored, properly disposing refuse, keeping exterior doors closed, and reporting pests when you see them by contacting the Customer Service Help Desk at 895-HELP (4357). While pests cannot be eliminated, they can be controlled. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

2005.01.12 - Environmental Impact Report for 2004

Yesterday, I sent the campus an email indicating how much material we recycled in 2004. We recycled 407.7 tons of paper products (including books). This email translates that figure into number of 40 foot fir trees saved, gallons of water saved, pounds of air pollution prevented, cubic yards of landfill space saved and kilowatt hours of energy saved.

(NOTE: I want to point out that these figures are for FUN and not to spark a debate of accuracy. The conversion data is used by many campus recycling programs and each figure shows the source of the information).

  • 40 Foot Fir Trees Saved: 6,931
1 ton = 17 forty foot douglas fir trees
source = EPA 1st report to Congress: "Resource Recycling and Source Reduction", 3rd edition, 1974
  • Water Saved (gallons): 2,853,900
    1 ton = 7,000 gallons of water
source = EPA 1st report to Congress: "Resource Recycling and Source Reduction", 3rd edition, 1974
  • Air Pollution Prevented (pounds): 24,462
1 ton = 60 pounds of air pollutants
source = EPA 1st report to Congress: "Resource Recycling and Source Reduction", 3rd edition, 1974
  • Landfill Space Saved (cubic yards): 1,223
1 ton = 3 cubic yards of landfill space
source = American Paper Institute, Inc. report: "Paper Recycling and Its Role In Solid Waste Management"
  • Energy Saved (kilowatt hours): 1,672,385.4
1 ton = 4,102 kilowatt hours of electricity
source = Pacific Gas and Electric

Keep recycling!!!! Let's increase all the figures for 2005!!!!!

If you have suggestions for improving recycling in your area or department, please call or email us. We are open to suggestions and appreciate input!!!!

2004.11.09 - Telephone Voicemail Change

On Sunday, November 21 at 12 AM Telecommunications and Sprint will cutover our outdated Meridian Mail voice mail system to a new product called "Call Pilot." This new system has better security features with duplicate hard drives. It is the first major upgrade to our voicemail system in 10 years.

Kristin Scribner from Sprint has been interviewing departments with voice menus to recreate them for CallPilot. Departments that have been unable to arrange transfer of these voice menus to Call Pilot will loose their old Meridian Mail voice menus on that Sunday. Recreation of the voice menus after cutover to Call Pilot may take up to two weeks. There is still time; we urge all concerned to check with Kristin. Her telephone number is 244-1679.

On Monday, November 22, all mailbox users will have to re-record their mailbox greetings and the passwords should stay the same. All previously heard messages will be deleted.

If you have a voice menu and have not made cutover arrangements with Kristin or have difficulty reaching her, please call me at 51363.

Thank you,

2004.08.18 - New General Use Access Card Process

Facilities Management is pleased to announce a new process designed to assist academic departments provide for the electronic access needs of late-hire faculty members. A new General Use Access Card process will go into effect immediately, just in time for the fall semester. It will temporarily take the place of the normal Key Request process when requesting electronic access for faculty, instructors, graduate and research assistants that are hired at or just prior to the beginning of the fall or spring semesters.

The process consists of issuing general use access cards that are programmed to only allow entry through electronically protected building entrances and technology-enhanced classrooms. Once requests for these cards are received, they can be processed and delivered to departments quickly, usually by the next business day in most cases. The department will then have two weeks to fill out a modified Key Request form indicating the instructor's name, the identification number of the general use card they were issued, and their access needs for the balance of the semester. Once these are received, the Key Shop will transfer ownership of that card to the instructor and make the appropriate access changes to complete the card issuing process. There will be no need to exchange one card for another and no interruption in service, making the process virtually seamless.

All forms along with more detailed instructions on how and when to use this process are available from our website at http://www.unlv.edu/facilities/workcontrol.

Please note that this is process will only be valid for a limited period of time each semester and is not intended to be an alternative to good planning. The normal key request process for access cards must continue to be followed during the bulk of the year when names and access requirements are known in advance. It also does not apply to requests for hard keys, which must continue to be requested, processed and delivered via use of a Key Request form per the published UNLV Key Policy.

We hope you'll find this new process to be fast and easy, as well as help to relieve some of the difficulties associated with late hour faculty hires. If you have any questions, please contact the Facilities Management Customer Service Help Desk at 895-HELP (4357).

2004.07.02 - You Have The Power

You can reduce energy usage at UNLV without compromising your comfort, work, or safety.

The following True or False statements will help you exercise your power.

(T or F)   1. I use a desktop lamp versus the overhead lights. Why should I light a tennis court to read a sheet of paper?

(T or F)   2. For three copies or less, I use the printer; for more, I use the copier.

(T or F)   3. I use the more efficient printer. Laser printers use 300 watts; inkjets use only 10, for similar quality.

(T or F)   2. Our office uses the "stand-by" button on our copier to lighten our energy load by 70%.

(T or F)   5. A computer monitor uses 60 watts of power; so I turn it off if when I leave for more than 10 minutes.

(T or F)   6. I recycle paper, which reduces water use by 60%, energy by 70%, and cuts pollution in half.

I you are able to answer all these statements True you are using your "Power" wisely and thereby reducing energy consumption, aiding the environment, and reducing energy costs to UNLV. If not you have an opportunity.

For further information, please check out the UNLV Energy Management web site at http://www.unlv.edu/facilities/energy/. You may email to energymgmt@ccmail.nevada.edu.

2004.01.22 - Enterprise Rent-a-Car Comes to the Motor Pool

Facilities Management and Planning is pleased to announce a new service for Motor Pool clients. Effective immediately, the resources of Enterprise Rent-A-Car will supplement the current Motor Pool fleet to better serve campus rental vehicle needs. Because the rental rate structures differ, the most economical vehicle (UNLV Motor Pool or Enterprises) will depend on total mileage and days of usage. The Motor Pool staff will advise which source offers the lowest charge for the intended trip/use. Rental procedures remain the same. Contact the Motor Pool (5-3100) for questions.
