Drop Off Recycling

The DUDO was started in October 1998 to give faculty, staff and students, living in apartments or condos, the opportunity to recycle because multi-family housing units do not provide recycling to tenants. The dumpsters were provided through a grant from the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP). The community is encouraged to use the bins. Click here for instructions. Instructions
This is a volunteer run project. Individuals are responsible for sorting through these bins and the materials. With this in mind, please read the following guidelines to help us efficiently operate this community service program.
We accept the following items in the Drive Up and Drop Off:
- Newspaper
- Paper
- Cardboard
- Plastic #1
- Plastic #2
- Aluminum
- Steel
THERE ARE SIX RECYCLING DUMPSTERS:
1) The first dumpster is for NEWSPAPER. Please remove any rubberbands or plastic bags. If you have a small quantity of newspaper and it is mixed with your other paper, you may place it is the second dumpster for paper.
2) The second dumpster is for all PAPER. Paper includes:
white paper
mixed paper/junk mail/envelopes/colored paper/office paper/magazines
cereal boxes/chipboard like cardboard material
books (hardback, softback or telephone books)
paper grocery bags
3) The third bin is a shed for CARDBOARD. Please place cereal boxes and similar feeling materials in the paper dumpster. Flattening cardboard helps conserve space in this shed/bin.
4) The fourth dumpster is for PLASTIC #2. Please check the bottom of the container and find the recycle symbol with the number inside. Plastic #2 is usually milk jugs, laundry detergent bottles, and shampoo bottles. We can not take plastic bags - sorry! If this dumpster is full when you visit, please put all the plastic in the Plastic #1 dumpster.
5) The fifth dumpster is for PLASTIC #1. Please check the bottom of the container and find the recycle symbol with the number inside. Plastic #1 is usually individual soda and water bottles. Even if there is a number 1, we can not take plastic fountain/coffee cups or food containers. If this dumpster is full when you visit, please put all the plastic in the Plastic #2 dumpster.
6) The sixth dumpster is for ALUMINUM AND STEEL. These can be commingled in the same dumpster.
PLEASE HELP US KEEP THE DRIVE UP AND DROP OFF AREA CLEAN. Any bags left next to the dumpsters should be securely tied and any boxes of paper should be weighed down to avoid wind-blown litter.
WE DO NOT TAKE GLASS!!!!! Sorry! Glass will be discarded in the trash if left near the Drive Up and Drop Off. Glass is not marketable; it is very heavy and dangerous for handling; and we do not have adequate storage facilities to stockpile it. DO NOT BRING OR LEAVE GLASS!!!!
WE DO NOT TAKE PLASTIC #3 THROUGH #7. Sorry! Plastic #3 through #7 will be discarded in the trash if placed in the Drive Up and Drop Off. We can not find a market for these materials. DO NOT BRING OR LEAVE PLASTIC #3 THROUGH #7!!!!
THESE DUMPSTERS ARE EMPTIED BY VOLUNTEERS. Please be respectful and only bring clean containers, especially milk jugs, steel cans, dog/cat food cans and detergent bottles.
If you have questions about these instructions, please either email tara.pike@unlv.edu or call (702) 895-376.
