Environmental Impact Report
Between 2003 and 2006, the UNLV Rebel Recycling Program recycled 2,144.5 tons of materials. Paper/Fiber (cardboard, paper, books) recycled was 1,641.6 tons. The diversion of these materials from the Apex landfill to the manufacturing process resulted in the following positive impact on the global environment:
- 40 Foot Fir Trees Saved: 27,907
1 ton = 17 forty foot Douglas fir trees (1,641.6 tons X 17 trees/ton = 27,907 trees)
source = EPA 1st report to Congress: "Resource Recycling and Source Reduction", 3rd edition, 1974 Water Saved (gallons): 943,600
1 ton = 7,000 gallons of water
source = EPA 1st report to Congress: "Resource Recycling and Source Reduction", 3rd edition, 1974
- Water Saved (gallons): 15,011,500
1 ton = 7,000 gallons of water (2,144.5 tons X 7,000 gallons/ton = 15,011,500 gallons)
source = EPA 1st report to Congress: "Resource Recycling and Source Reduction", 3rd edition, 1974
- Air Pollution Prevented (pounds): 128,670
1 ton = 60 pounds of air pollutants (2,144.5 tons X 60 lbs of air pollutants/ton = 128,670 lbs of air pollutants)
source = EPA 1st report to Congress: "Resource Recycling and Source Reduction", 3rd edition, 1974

Landfill Space Saved (cubic yards): 6433.5 (2,144.5 tons X 3 cu. yds. landfill space/ton = 6,433.5 cubic yards landfill space)
1 ton = 3 cubic yards of landfill space
source = American Paper Institute, Inc. report: "Paper Recycling and Its Role In Solid Waste Management"
- Energy Saved (kilowatt hours): 8,796,739
1 ton = 4,102 kilowatt hours of electricity (2,144.5 tons X 4,102 KWH/ton = 8,796,739 KWH)
source = Pacific Gas and Electric
